  • The shirasaya is a preservation scabbard for Japanese swords, comparable to pajamas for daily wear — comfort is its primary design priority. Shirasaya are crafted from very soft wood. Multiple disassembly and fitting adjustments are performed during production. Even factory‑made Japanese‑origin shirasaya may exhibit the conditions described below. By placing an order, you agree to accept the following conditions (these terms apply to hand‑made, semi‑hand‑made, and mass‑produced mechanical‑manufactured shirasaya alike):
  • Minor gaps at the scabbard opening and where it meets the tsuka (handle) are unavoidable. These gaps result from wood deformation caused by repeated insertion and removal of the tsuka. This is normal. This issue can be improved by adding a horn koi‑guchi fitting.
  • The tsuka must never be struck with force. Forceful impact will deform the soft wood. For this reason, we do not assemble the tsuba and tsuka to a zero‑gap fit. Small gaps between tsuba and tsuka are normal and cannot be eliminated.
  • Lateral side‑to‑side play of the tsuba may occur. The fit between tsuka and tsuba on a shirasaya is not as tight as on a full‑mounted katana koshirae. Even when fitted as snugly as possible during assembly, repeated mounting‑dismounting and wood deformation will gradually cause slight loosening.
